Suits and suitability

Maggie Alderson writes that it shouldn't matter what women politicians wear—but it does.

I agree.

Ms Alderson notes that the British Home Secretary Theresa May wore large costume-jewelry pearls at a press conference the day after the riots in London and comments: "There was just something jarring about the Home Secretary wearing oversized ‘fun’ beads on such a dark night in the history of Great Britain."

The issue isn't sartorial freedom, it's suitability. When you have to say serious things, you need to look as if you mean what you say.
